What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth, from the gum line up. It is designed to restore the tooth’s original shape, size, strength, and appearance after it has been damaged, weakened, or significantly decayed.
Crowns are also used to protect a tooth following root canal treatment, to anchor a dental bridge, to cover a dental implant, or to improve the appearance of a severely discolored or misshapen tooth.
Dr. Hedvat evaluates each patient individually to determine whether a crown is the most appropriate treatment, and discusses all available options, including alternatives, before any procedure begins.
When Is a Crown Recommended?
- Large decay or cavity — When a filling is not sufficient to restore the tooth’s structure.
- Cracked or fractured tooth — To hold the tooth together and prevent the crack from worsening.
- After root canal treatment — To protect the treated tooth from fracture.
- Worn-down tooth — From grinding or acid erosion.
- Dental implant restoration — The crown attaches to the implant post to complete the replacement tooth.
- Cosmetic improvement — For severely discolored or misshapen teeth when other options are not appropriate.

Crown Materials — What to Expect
The most appropriate crown material depends on the tooth’s location, function, bite forces, and your individual clinical situation. Dr. Hedvat will discuss the options most suitable for your specific case.
All-Ceramic (Porcelain)
Provides excellent aesthetics and closely mimics the translucency of natural tooth enamel. Often recommended for front teeth where appearance is a priority.
Zirconia
A strong, tooth-colored material that offers both durability and aesthetics. Suitable for front and back teeth. Discussed further on our Zirconia page.
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM)
A ceramic outer layer bonded to a metal substructure. Provides strength for back teeth, though a thin dark line may be visible at the gum line over time.
Metal Alloy
Highly durable and requires minimal tooth reduction. Typically recommended for back molars where appearance is less of a concern and bite forces are greatest.
Crown material recommendations are made following a clinical examination and discussion of your individual needs and preferences.
The Crown Procedure at Smile Care Valencia
Most dental crown procedures are completed in two appointments. Here is a general overview of what to expect:
Examination & Treatment Planning
Dr. Hedvat examines the tooth, reviews any necessary X-rays, and discusses whether a crown is the most appropriate treatment option for your situation.
Tooth Preparation
The tooth is reshaped under local anesthesia to create space for the crown. The amount of tooth structure removed depends on the crown material selected.
Impression & Temporary Crown
An impression (digital or traditional) is taken and sent to a dental laboratory. A temporary crown protects the prepared tooth while your permanent crown is being fabricated.
Final Crown Placement
At your second appointment, the temporary crown is removed, the permanent crown is checked for fit and bite, and it is permanently cemented in place.
* Treatment timelines and procedures vary based on individual clinical needs. Some situations may require additional appointments.
