What are Dentures?

Dentures are items that are used to replace the lost teeth in your mouth. They are a temporary replacement and can be worn or taken out as the individual wishes. Dentures are especially uncomfortable to wear, and even when the mouth becomes used to them, they do not feel like the natural teeth. With the advancement and innovations in technology, the quality of dentures has improved over the years and the ones being worn today are much more comfortable than the previous models, and there is an enhanced level of comfort when wearing them. Dentures in Santa Clarita can be broadly categorized into two types namely the partial dentures and the full dentures. The type of dentures a dentist will recommend will depend on the number of missing teeth and the amount of money that will be charged.

How do Dentures Work?

When using the full dentures, the gums will be covered by the acrylic base which is in color resembling that of the flesh. The roof of the mouth or the palate is covered by the upper denture base while the lower denture will have a horseshoe-like shape to facilitate the tongue. The dentures are personalized or custom made for every individual using the dental impressions taken which are then sent to a dental laboratory. The dental impressions taken will assist your dentist in determining the type of denture that is ideal for you.

Types of dentures

Conventional Full Denture

These types of dentures are fixed in the mouth after all the remaining teeth have been extracted and the gum tissues have completely healed. The process of healing the gum tissues might take a long duration of up to several months during which you will have no teeth in your mouth and eating might be impossible.

Immediate Full Denture

This type of denture is fixed into place as soon as the last remaining teeth are extracted. Prior to the visit during which the teeth will be removed the dentist will take measurements of your jaw then create a model jaw for you before you come for the extraction. The main advantage of the immediate full denture is that there is no single day that the patient will have to endure without their teeth but the drawback is that after several months the dentures have to be relined. The main purpose of the relining is because as the jawbone supporting the teeth heals it is bound to reshape which might loosen the denture.

Partial Denture

These types of dentures make use of a metal frame which is attached to the natural teeth. In some cases, crowns can be inserted on a few natural teeth to serve as the denture anchor. These types of dentures Santa Clarita are temporary and can be used instead of bridges.

How long does it take to get used to dentures?

The period taken before your mouth can become accustomed or comfortable when wearing dentures varies from one individual to the next. For some, it might be the first few weeks while some individuals might take several months before their mouths become used to dentures. Dr Hedvat acknowledges that take some practicing before you can comfortably speak and eat with dentures.
